Abstract

In the U.S., abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the most common type of extracranial aneurysm, affecting 4%-8% of men and 1.5% of women over age 60 years. Because of the high rupture rate, AAA is a serious health problem, especially in Western countries, where it accounts for about 2%-4% of all deaths in the male population.(1)
An AAA is considered present when the maximum diameter of the infrarenal aorta is 3.0 cm or greater.(2) Occasionally a size of 3.0 cm is seen in normal older people with a large body size. Follow-up ultrasound measurements are needed to
rule out the possibility of AAA.
